Walt’s Place, 554 South Locust Street, is home to our free After-School Program, providing school-aged children in the Hilltop neighborhood with a safe and positive environment Monday-Friday, from 3:30 to 5:30 during the school year; and 8:30 to noon during the summer. Children benefit from free one-to-one tutoring, meals, recreation, and adult mentoring while parents work or attend school. Yet, Walt’s Place is more than care as our children also have fun, interact with friends, play games, create crafts, and enjoy our monitored STEM computer lab, provided in part by the Porter County Community Foundation.
Walt’s Place children thrive with help from adult mentoring from trained staff and dedicated volunteers. Many of our staff members are qualified work-study students from Valparaiso University who serve as positive role models and mentors, helping with homework, coaching games, and playing alongside our children. With the help of sponsorships and community support, Walt’s Place hosts supervised field trips to places like the library, Central Park, fire department, swimming pool, baseball games and other enriching experiences.
